Oklahoma

Por segunda vez en este año, tuve la oportunidad de visitar a mis amigos en Oklahoma. Salimos muy temprano de Dallas. A bordo íbamos Mirna, Enrique, Gigí, yo, las perritas: Minga, Kiona, y Chatita (de Gigí).
Luego de manejar cuatro horas llegamos a Tulsa para visitar a Miguel (de México) y Yun-ke (de Taiwán) quienes son mis amigos desde que estudiaba en UNT.
Visitamos el Museo Gilcrease que contiene una colección muy bonita de arte nativo Americano incluyendo piezas de México.
Comimos en una calle muy simpática parecida a Greenville Avenue en Dallas, y visitamos una tienda que ofrece inhaladores de oxígeno en sabores, así como pipas comunitarias para fumar no se que cosa, y una variedad de curiosidades.
Estuvimos también en el jardín de rosas y en general pasándola bien en la ciudad. Por la noche vimos la versión sin cortes de "Cinema Paradiso."
Por ahí de las dos de la mañana la tormenta que llevaba rato en acción, generó algunos tornados como en el Mago de Oz. Y aunque no estábamos en Kansas Toto, este tipo de fenómenos son frecuentes en Oklahoma, así como en Texas.
Las sirenas de alerta sonaron y a tan solo diez millas de la casa, un tornado tocó tierra. Fué una experiencia interesante que ya había tenido con anterioridad. Yo prefiero tornados a terremotos definitivamente.
Al día siguiente salimos tempranito y manejamos un par de horas hasta Oklahoma City. Acudimos al servicio espiritual de la Iglesia de Vida Unida de Ciencia de la Religión. Fué muy bonito y evocador.
Saliendo visitamos el monumento a la memoria de las víctimas del atentado terrorista de hace unos años. Tembién fuímos a los jardines botánicos Myriad que son una maravilla.
Finalmente emprendimos la última escala del viaje, y cuatro horas más tarde, estábamos en la granja Longwood, propiedad de Ken y Mitch.
Muchos soñamos con renunciar al trabajo y mudarnos a un pueblito lejano. Pues bien, eso es exactamente lo que Ken y Mitch hicieron en el verano del 2003.
Su granja es fantástica. El propósito principal es cultivar viñedos y elaborar vino. El año entrante vendrá la primera cosecha y más tarde iniciarán todo el proceso para hacer el vino.
Además tienen en la granja, árboles de peras y duraznos, y todo tipo de vegetales. Incluso gallinas para controlar cierto tipo de insectos.
Nos trataron como reyes. Por la noche, Gigi y yo tocamos la guitarra y cantamos un rato frente a la chimenea en el exterior de la casa. Hacía algo de frío, pero la noche estaba preciosa.
Al día siguiente, nos fuímos al Río Cimarrón, donde Minga y Kiona parece ser que finalmente le encontraron gusto al agua. El río es poco profundo, lo que les permitió correr en el agua, aunque en algunas partes tuvieron que nadar.

En general fué una increíble experiencia. Quiero agradecer a nuestros anfitriones por todas sus atenciones, esperando verles muy pronto.

For the second time in this year, I had the chance to visit my friends in Oklahoma. We departed very early from Dallas. In our party was Mirna, Enrique, Gigi, myself, the doggies: Minga, Kiona, and Chatita (Gigi's).
After driving for four hours, we reached Tulsa to visit Miguel (from México) and Yun-ke (from Taiwan) who are friends of mine since I was studying at UNT.
We visited the Gilcrease Museum winch holds a beautiful Native American collection, including pieces from México.
We had dinner at a picturesque street similar to Greenville Avenue in Dallas. We visited a store which offers oxygen inhalers in different flavors, as well as community pipes to smoke I do not what, and a variety of curiosities.
Also, we visited the rose garden and spend a great time hanging out in the city. Later on, we watched the un-cut version of the Italian movie, "Cinema Paradiso."
About two o'clock in the morning, the storm that had been in action for a while, generated some tornados like in the Wizard of Oz. Even when we were not in Kansas Toto, this kind of phenomena are frequent in Oklahoma as well as in Texas.
The emergency sirens started to sound, and just ten miles away from the house a tornado touched down. It was an interesting experience which I had already before. I prefer tornados rather than earthquakes, that is for sure.
Next day, we left very early and drove a couple of hours to Oklahoma City. We went to the spiritual service at the Church of Religious Science, United Life Church. It was powerful and inspiring.
After that, we visited the memorial dedicated to the victims of the terrorist attack that happened a few years ago. Also, we went to the Myriad Gardens which are just wonderful.
Finally, we started the last part of our trip, and four hours later we were in Longwood Farm, property of Ken and Mitch.
Many of us dream about quitting our jobs and move out to live in a little and far away town. Well, that's exactly what Ken and Mitch actually did in Summer 2003.
Their farm is just fantastic. The main purpose is to create a winery. Next year they will have the first harvest and later on they will start with all the process to produce wine.
They also have in the farm, pear trees, peach trees, and all kinds of vegetables. Even they have some chickens to control specific insects.
They treated us like kings. By night, Gigi and I played guitar and sang in front of the fireplace outside of the house. It was a cool and chilly night, but it was just fantastic.
Next day, we went to the Cimarron River where looks like Minga and Kiona finally found an attraction for water. The river is shallow, so they were able to run in the water. There were only few areas where they needed to swim.
Ken sent me a CD with the pictures he shot. At the end of this column you can see my pictures and Ken's in teh virtual galleries.
In general, it was an amazing experience. I want to thank all our hosts for their kindness. We hope to see them very soon.
