Mi vida Scout

En esta página escribiré más adelante, a cerca de mis experiencias en los Boy Scouts. Por ahora, presento la carta de despedida del jefe fundador del movimiento Scout.

"Queridos Scouts:

Si alguna vez han visto la obra de "Peter Pan", recordarán cómo el jefe de los piratas estaba siempre haciendo su último discurso de despedida por temor de que, posiblemente, cuando llegara la hora en que habría de morir, no fuera a tener tiempo para darlo a conocer. Así me sucede a mí, y aún cuando no me estoy muriendo en este momento, ésto tendrá que suceder uno de estos días, y deseo decirles una palabra de despedida. Recuerden: esta es la última que oiréis de mí, por lo tanto, medítenla.

He tenido una vida muy dichosa, y deseo que todos ustedes tengan también vidas muy dichosas. Estoy convencido de que Dios nos ha puesto en este mundo maravilloso para que seamos felices y gocemos de la vida. Pero la felicidad no proviene simplemente de la riqueza, ni de tener éxito en la carrera, ni dándose uno gusto a sí mismo. Un paso hacia la felicidad es hacerse uno sano y fuerte cuando niño, para poder ser útil y así poder gozar de la vida cuando se es hombre.

El estudio de la naturaleza les enseñará cómo Dios ha llenado de cosas bellas y maravillosas este mundo para que lo puedan gozar. Estén satisfechos con lo que les haya tocado y saquen de ello el mejor partido que puedan. Vean siempre el lado bueno de las cosas y no el malo.

Pero la verdadera manera de obtener la felicidad es haciendo felices a los demás. Traten de dejar este mundo en mejores condiciones de como lo encontraron; de ésta manera, cuando les llegue la hora de morir, podrán hacerlo felices porque, por lo menos, no perdieron el tiempo e hicieron cuanto les fue posible por hacer el bien. "Esten Listos" en ésta forma, para gozar de una vida dichosa y morir dichosos: aférrense a su Promesa Scout siempre, aún cuando hayan dejado de ser muchachos. Que Dios los ayude a hacerlo así.

In this page, I will later write about my experiences in Boy Scouts. For now, I present the farwell letter from the founder chief of the Scout movement.

"Dear Scouts,

If you have ever seen the play ‘Peter Pan’ you will remember how the pirate chief was always making his dying speech because he was afraid that possibly when the time came for him to die he might not have time to get it off his chest. It is much the same with me, and so, although I am not at this moment dying, I shall be doing so one of these days and I want to send you a parting word of goodbye. Remember, it is the last you will ever hear from me, so think it over.

I have had a most happy life and I want each one of you to have a happy life too. I believe that God put us in this jolly world to be happy and enjoy life. Happiness doesn’t come from being rich, nor merely from being successful in your career, nor by self-indulgence. One step towards happiness is to make yourself healthy and strong while you are a boy, so that you can be useful and so can enjoy life when you are a man.

Nature study will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things God has made for the world to enjoy. Be contented with what you have got and make the best of it. Look on the bright side of things instead of the gloomy one.

But the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people. Try and leave this world a little better than you found it and when your time comes to die, you can die happy in feeling that at any rate you have not wasted your time but have done your best. ‘Be Prepared’ in this way, to live happy and die happy – stick to your Scout Promise always – even after you have ceased to be a boy – and God help you to do it.
